This August 2005 report presents the results of an inventory of nearly all (98.5%) of California institutions of higher education that train adults to teach children under the age of five, including certificate, associate, bachelor's, master's and PhD programs. Includes data on student and faculty characteristics; coursework and practicum experiences provided; challenges faced by these programs; and available student supports to make programs accessible.

This study is linked to a national study of Early Childhood Teacher Preparation Programs in the US, led by researchers at the FPG Child Development Institute. This study was the first to provide a comprehensive portrait of early care and education services in one community, followed prospectively over time, and including all three sectors of the industry: licensed center-based care, licensed family child care homes, and license-exempt home-based care. Data collection took place in 2001-2003.
