ABOUT THE IRLE LIBRARY
The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment Library (IRLEL) is an Affiliated Library of the UC Berkeley campus. It serves faculty, staff, students, members of the Institute for research on Labor and Employment (formerly the Institute of Industrial Relations), other researchers in the UC system, and the general public. Outreach services are of special import.
The Library conducts training sessions and offers research support for its key on-campus constituencies and also for the Labor Movement. It maintains strong links with community groups, and staff consult widely with academics and citizen-researchers interested in labor issues, labor economics, and organization studies.
The Library's print collections number in excess of 45,000 volumes, and are housed at the IRLE, UC Berkeley.
Sections of the collection are stored at the Northern Regional Library Facility. Collections are catalogued in UC Berkeley's Library Pathfinder and in the California Digital Library.
In addition to offering reference service and print collections, the Library also manages the Web publishing efforts of the IRLE units. As part of that mission, the Library prepares digital versions of working papers, digital labor art and other Web-based resources.
COLLECTION GOALS
The IRLE Library collects information in multiple disciplines and formats about employment and workplace issues. Particular strengths of the collection are labor history, labor and culture, labor and the arts, labor
relations, organization studies, international labor issues, trade unionism and collective bargaining.
REFERENCE SERVICE
Reference service is available to all members of the UC Berkeley community and the general public. In depth consultations are available by public.
WEB ADMINISTRATION
The Library provides Web administration services for the entire Institute, its constituent programs and faculty projects. Traffic on the IRLE Web is very high, typically in excess of five million downloads per year.
DIGITAL INITIATIVES
Collective Bargaining Agreements. The Library is interested in making digital copies of collective bargaining agreements available to researchers. It manages a repository of agreements within the eScholarship Repository. Unions that are interested in contributing copies may send them via email for inclusion
Digitization of IRLE’s publications. In fall 2006, the Library will begin digitizing the full run of the publications of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. Publications commence at the end of World War II and run through the present time; this record of academic study provides a valuable overview of the issues of industrial relations for the mid and late Twentieth Century.
Working Papers and Conference Papers. The Library is depositing working papers, conference papers and other program materials in the eScholarship Repository, and also maintains current copies of many original, “born digital” publications on this server.
